Filed under: Festive Recipes — maha @ 9:37 pm

Ugadi, The New Year for Andhra Pradesh & Karnataka. Also celebrated as Gudi Padwa in Maharastra on the same day.

This auspicious day begins with prayers and eating of the traditional tamarind sauce called as “Ugadi Pachadi” in Andhra Pradesh and “Bevu-Bella” in Karnataka.

Ugadi Pachadi resembles the mixture of feelings in Life:

  • Neem Buds/Flowers for Bitterness
  • Jaggery for Sweetness
  • Raw Mango for Vagaru
  • Tamarind Juice for sour
  • Salt for Salt
  • Chillies for Hotness

The Making of Ugadi Pachadi:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of tamarind juice
  • 1/2 tbsp of Jaggery
  • 1/2 cup Raw Mango (cut into fine pieces along with skin)
  • 1 small green chillies
  • 2 tsp Neem Flower (Vepa Puvvu)
  • 1/4 tsp salt

Method:
Mix all the above ingredients to make the Ugadi Pachadi.

Note: To prepare 1 cup tamarind juice, soak small lemon sized tamarind to 1 cup of water for 15-20 mins. The blend manually and filter.

  1. i find it so confusing that you (like almost all indians) post recipes in
an english blog but dont translate the name of the recipe nor many of the ingredients into english

if the recipe was labeled ” potato curry” that would make sense but to view a list of recipes all in a foreign language is meaningless

are you posting for other indians? then why bother to use english at all?

Because, My Dear Lynda, the medium of communication between most Indians is English only!!
